Night of Museums
On line by Sergio Palumbo, 123 Savoie
Saturday, 19 May 2007

The third " Night of Museums " will take place in Europe on Saturday, 19 May 2007. This event is enjoying a growing popularity among museums and attracts a larger number of visitors both in France and elsewhere in Europe. Last year, it was estimated that 934 French museums received 1.2 million visitors, and similar results were recorded in 960 museums in 41 other participating countries of Europe.

This year, the " Night of Museums " will be held during the Ascension weekend, and promises to be exceptional because all the participants have been invited to adopt an unusual and entertaining approach to celebrate the treasures, frequently unknown, that are part of the heritage of our museums. During this special night, from Azerbaijan to Spain, and from Cyprus to Russia, nearly 2000 European museums will open their doors free of charge from sunset to one o’clock in the morning. On this particular occasion, as venues for exhibitions or cultural events, many museums will be transformed into a stage for theatrical performances, readings, singing, tasting sessions, and other forms of entertainment. It will be a creative and friendly way of raising the awareness of a wider public, especially young people, and encouraging them to discover the collections of our museums from a different angle.

As the consequence of a determination to reach out to the widest public possible, the " Night of Museums " will also illustrate the goal of European museums to become part of a common project designed to discover different identities and cultures. To date, the following major European cities have already agreed to participate actively in this event: Baku, Brussels, Zagreb, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Belgrade, Tallinn, Budapest, Venice, Palermo, Riga, Vilnius, Cracow, Warsaw and Bucharest. The " Night of Museums " is placed under the patronage of the Council of Europe and is organised in parallel to the International Museum Day celebrated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM).
